It is this time of the year again, and here in the South African winter, we have to be ready to get warmer quickly and make it easy to peel off clothes at mid day when the sun is at his peak.

An easy way to start layering is to choose

3 coordinating colours and start playing

with them.

The more experienced you are with colours, the more you can try and experiment with colour clashing.

And don’t forget to have fun in the process!

Here are the 5 benefits of layering your clothes :

1/ Comfort

The overall idea behind layering is to create comfortable outfits.

Comfort goes hand in hand with hiding the bumps and lumps that we all have and are conscious of.

But be cautious, layering doesn’t mean only wearing oversize clothes.

If you do wear oversize clothes , make sure to wear an interesting piece ( colourful, embroidered..) or draw the attention to your face and not to the bagginess of your clothes.

 2/ Sustainability

You can reuse some Summer clothes in Winter, and you have to buy less new items of clothing.

It is easy to put a thin turtle neck under a summer Dress ( like in the pic above) and put a cardigan or jacket above to create a more wintery outfit, all of this without spending more money on clothes.

 3/ Adaptability

For us that go through Menopause and suffers of hot flushes, it is easy to get rid of one layer of clothes and still look stylish while regulating your body temperature.

 4/ Creativity

Layering clothes allows creative dressing at its best. Once you have started, you will soon see that the possibilities are endless.

Shopping in your wardrobe is becoming so easy!

5/ Slimming effect

An extra layer of clothes can camouflage the body bulges you don’t want people to notice, but if you leave the third layer open ( blazer or jersey) , it will draw attention into the front of the body and will automatically elongate the silhouette.

Now that you know the benefits,

Let’s do it In Style!

1/ Choose

3 coordinating colours and start playing with them.

That way you achieve a flawless and Stylish look.

To start off,

You can try a combination of off whites, cream or pale yellow for example.

2/ If you like mixing and matching patterns and you wish to layer patterns, be a little more cautious. I love mixing thin stripes and checks with paisley or flower patterns. If you do so, make sure these patterns have all at least one colour in common.

3/ Your base layer ( t-shirt, turtle neck, cami) should be body hugging to avoid creating unnecessary bulk

4/ For a maximum effect, choose items of clothing are of different lengths.

5/ If you layer bright colours only or are after high contrast, make sure the colours you use are complimentary.

My favorite combinations:

  • Purple, emerald-green, gum pink,

  • Neon pink, dark orange, light orange

  • Dark plum, turquoise, coffee bean

  • French Navy, lime, turquoise

  • purple, cobalt, yellow, fuschia pink
